Oz Rewatch 3: S2E04: Losing Your Appeal

This was the mid-season finale, technically, but all in all, this episode felt a little quiet. I think part of it was that the main storylines didn’t really hold either my nor Sister’s attention. The first main storyline continued on Said’s quest to turn an inmate into his cause, jumping from Hill on to Poet (with little self-reflection, lol) (surely the problem must lay elsewhere...). The funny thing is that I sort of forget what Said’s whole deal is this season, so I can only sit here and be vaguely frustrated and bamboozled along with Sister... Then there was stuff about Giles (snore). I suppose the O’Reily/Gloria storyline is good TV but I don’t like it lol. Things got more interesting in the later part of the episode, with the Adebisi/Schibetta conflict heating up, and also Chris arriving to Oz.

Storylines:

  • (Mini) Richie Hanlon kills a fellow inmate, tries to give info on Schillinger killing Vogel but it doesn’t stick
  • Said fails to get Hill’s sentence overturned. Later, he turns his focus to Poet’s parole.
  • O’Reily’s cancer storyline continues: he shaves his head. His obsession with Gloria begins, the episode’s segment culminating in him assaulting her.
  • (Mini) Rebadow and Busmalis agree to dig the hole together
  • (Mini) Sister Pete continues to try and solve what Giles is saying
  • Peter Schibetta vs Adebisi: Miguel gets requested by both sides to kill the other and refuses, choosing to sit back and watch them destroy the other
  • Chris Keller arrives in Oz, starts Operation Toby
  • (Mini) Shirley Bellinger flashback

Sister: ...Is he...? Yeah, he's racist, right?

Sister: ….....I don’t like this. Poor Shannon! Boo! Boo! [As if from far away on a mountain top] Don’t forget Shannon!

Sister: Girl, I think you misinterpreted.

Sister: I feel like they could have had the Giles parts just be a flashback.

Sister: They look like they're bachelors from different walks of life, all looking out of their respective apartment windows, reflecting on their lives after a night of questionable activities. Little Nemo Jr (Peter) has one of those big postmodern penthouses and he's holding a crystal glass with whiskey he's just swirling around and Miguel is in one of those New Yorky West Side Story ones with the fire escapes and the flowers under the window, and he's wearing like a 60s white and red plaid shirt. I don't know where Mr Poop Hat (Adebisi) is, I was too distracted by how weird it was when the camera went to the next guy.

Sister: Where does he get these…

Sister: He showed butt pretty fast
Me: Yeah, you’re gonna see a lot worse from him

Stray/Final thoughts:

  • I didn't say that much about Said, but here is a funny screencap of him:

  • Busmalis’s actor wears his wedding ring, I just noticed! I feel like he wears it in later seasons too lol
  • Third rewatch and I finally noticed that O’Reily has a cross tattoo on his back lol
  • O'Reily managing to shave his head bald with that orange razor is fantasy nonsense on the level of Toby killing Metzger with his fingernails
  • Toby’s vehicular manslaughter trial lasted TWENTY-EIGHT days?! Wtf were they arguing in court for 28 days?!?!
  • I do like Toby's scene with the judge in this episode. I feel like it was a good bit of acting and also it does more to show how he's been reflecting on the way things have gone down since meeting Kathy Rockwell's mother last season. Also it shows that he's still very much still in there under the crazy act.
  • Luckily me mentioning to Sister that Chris/Toby is canon isn't that much of a spoiler because they Chris is basically introduced by the Narrator as a love interest lol
  • Sister says every time I or anyone in the show says “Nino” she starts thinking “Oh little Nemo~ you take the prize~
Me: Final thoughts?
Sister:
Many receding hairlines. Strong butt cheeks. I wonder if the judge is going to be around again, and I wonder if those two people….Bellinhmmmm…..
↳At this point Sister trailed off for two seconds, her eyes closed where she was lounging. It turned out that she had hit a micro sleep in the middle of her sentence and had a dream where in her mind's eye Toby and Keller were in a Home Depot and she was zooming in on a nerf gun box, trying to read the names written on it to remember who they were (I had just told her that Shirley’s name was Bellinger, so that’s probably what she was processing in her power nap).
  • While we were watching the episode, Sister remembered that I had said something about Chico's goatee a couple weeks ago (that being that he eventually doesn't have one), but she still didn't guess that Chico was The Character that I said would show up in this episode lol
Me: [rewinding to Chico's first scene] Can I get a quote about this guy.
Sister:
Hm... let's see... Well, he looks like the personification of the chihuahua from Lady and the Tramp, because he has big eyes but also they're sort of droopy.

Sister: Like, he looks like his name is like... Chihuahua.... or like, Chico or something....
Me: ?!?!............ His name is Chico 💀
