Originally posted to tumblr (Some nice replies in the notes). Figured I would crosspost the AU idea here (and future ones), because I lost basically all of my TSOMD AUs when I accidentally deleted my blog a couple years ago (heartbreaking, I know).

Em City refers to the living quarters of the crew of course
Glynn is the ship captain and McManus is the dweeb that got a scientific side-expedition green-lit on the way to go hunt down some sea monsters for Devlin
Conflict and tensions arise due to the fact that aside from the submarine's crew and whatnot, there are the explorers/scientists of sorts, and then there are also those who are there basically to HUNT GIANT SEA MONSTER AND COLLECT THE BOUNTY 🤑🤑🤑

Initial characters/role thoughts:

I think Sister Pete, Mukada, and Dr Nathan could basically continue to be ship psychologist, priest (there to observe the exploration/happenings for the Bishop, witness God's wonders, etc), and ship doctor
Most of the hacks/SORT would basically just be on the team set on killing monsters, etc. I think Schillinger and Adebisi would also be on this crew, more as like hired bounty hunters and whatnot for the expedition, compared to the hacks and whoever who are more like the men/women that Glynn chose himself
BUSMALIS GEOLOGIST (idk, what if they encounter like submarine volcanoes or undersea caverns or whatnot)
Rebadow also some kind of old ass engineer who looks at schematics and shit. Naval architect? Idk would they be on board?
Said as McManus's like, second in command or whatever. They butt heads a lot about the purpose and goals of their exploration :P
I need to look up more jobs on a submarine 💀 My ignorance is making this AU die a quick death atm but I will be BACK
Actually none of the specifics are important. It's like starfleet. Who the fuck knows. They are under the sea and looking for monsters and also Miguel and Chico are making out passionately (< my original agenda)
I'm thinking neither of them rank particularly high or maybe Miguel used to be a bit of a hotshot and have more command or whatever it's called, but received some sort of disciplinary action that dragged him down the ranks again and he took the job post on Oz because his choices were limited.........and who should he meet aboard but his old friend turned enemy/detractor....... HEHEHE...... and they learn to get along again HA.... (pats my own shoulder) hey this is good stuff bro
Maybe Miguel became a diver/explorer type at one point and now he's stuck back doing grunt work 👀 ranks under Chico now, even
Anyway, much to think about...

YESSS I was thinking about Mole EXACTLY (even though my mind sort of shifted this to be more like a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea AU)
Ok Chris can still jump off something or pulling some of kind of "going down with the submersible" redemption move :P
Yeah I could see Said being their for religious purposes too, like sort of from an academic viewpoint compared to Mukada who's there strictly as an observer/spy (😂?) for the Bishop. I was sort of thinking Said as an expert of some kind on various ancient sea monsters as well, but he doesn't want to kill them if they do find them, so he's sort of there in the beginning to sabotage Glynn's mission as well (sort of paralleling the riot arc of s1). Maybe if they are looking for Noah's ark (did it sink ? 😭 ), its mythical rotted shell has also become the dwelling place of many lost sea creatures said to have been aboard (thus giving a reason for the combined glynn/mcmanus mission).
Idk what Toby's job would be but maybe he's known for going stir crazy sometimes when they get to like the midpoint of the sea journey (tangentially related: Beecher Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde AU anyone?? That's my full thought there btw)
The O'Reilys are definitely on the bounty hunters side of things lol (well, maybe Cyril isn't there 😭 Or maybe he is, as a seamen trying to get his act together while Ryan is there like 🦀 money money money 🦀, dragging him into trouble
This came to me while I was drifting off to sleep last night: Chico as a communications officer! His role in Oz as 2ic to the rotating El Norte leaders basically had him organising the foot soldiers probably, so being a guy who coordinates behind the scenes makes sense, I think! And that way also, he has a very firm grasp of Miguel's mission history, especially if he was also in Miguel's ear during expeditions aboard previous ships... Maybe they did a stint as mercenaries too, and went aboard a lot of smaller vessels for riskier jobs and higher payout (I'm envisioning a world where deep sea travel and treasure/monster hunting is like the new frontier, like space or whatever) Maybe he was even there when shit hit the fan in the past (👀 the deaths of Carlo Ricardo and Jorge Vasquez on a dive that was risky to begin with?) ... Then they sort of go their separate ways and lose contact but come across each other on the Oswald and are reintroduced as needing to work together 💀
